BMR and energy figures are population-based estimates, not medical requirements.

What BMR means

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy your body uses at complete rest to keep you alive — breathing, circulation, temperature control and cell repair. Most of your daily energy goes on BMR; the rest is used by movement, work and digesting food.

Methodology

SeafarerFit uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which research has found to be among the more accurate prediction equations for healthy adults:

  • Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) + 5
  • Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) − 161

The daily energy requirement multiplies BMR by an activity factor from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (extremely active). Equations are averages: individual needs can differ by 10% or more. These figures are estimates, not medical requirements.

Next: turn your estimate into a practical target with the daily calorie estimator.
