Seafarer Medical Requirements in Canada

In Canada, Transport Canada regulates seafarer medical certification. Examinations are carried out by Marine Medical Examiners designated by Transport Canada.

Examination information

The examination is conducted by a designated Marine Medical Examiner, who reports to Transport Canada.

Approved / authorized medical examiners

Transport Canada publishes a searchable list of designated Marine Medical Examiners.

Medical certificate

Transport Canada issues the marine medical certificate following the examination. International minimums (MLC, 2006 Standard A1.2 and STCW Regulation I/9) cap medical certificates at two years (one year for seafarers under 18) and colour-vision certification at six years. National rules may be stricter.
