Seafarer Medical Requirements in New Zealand
In New Zealand, Maritime New Zealand (Maritime NZ) sets medical fitness requirements for seafarers and approves the medical practitioners who examine them.

Applicable standards
Maritime NZ publishes medical fitness guidance for STCW / STCW-F seafarers and separate guidance for national and ring-fenced seafarers, together with medical and eyesight requirements.
Examination information
STCW and STCW-F seafarers are examined using the Maritime NZ medical examination form by an approved medical practitioner.
Approved / authorized medical examiners
Maritime NZ publishes a list of approved medical practitioners.
Medical certificate
International minimums (MLC, 2006 Standard A1.2 and STCW Regulation I/9) cap medical certificates at two years (one year for seafarers under 18) and colour-vision certification at six years. National rules may be stricter. Different arrangements apply to national and ring-fenced certificates — see Maritime NZ guidance.

Hearing

Renewal
Renew with an approved medical practitioner before expiry.
