Seafarer Medical Requirements in Norway

In Norway, the Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet) regulates seafarer medical certificates. Examinations are carried out by seafarer's doctors approved by the Authority, in Norway and abroad.

Applicable standards

Norwegian regulations on medical examinations of employees on board ships implement MLC, 2006 and STCW requirements. The Authority publishes guidance for seafarers and doctors.

Examination information

The examination must be performed by an approved Norwegian seafarer's doctor.

Approved / authorized medical examiners

The Norwegian Maritime Authority approves seafarer's doctors, including doctors in some other countries. Check the Authority's website for the current list.

Medical certificate

International minimums (MLC, 2006 Standard A1.2 and STCW Regulation I/9) cap medical certificates at two years (one year for seafarers under 18) and colour-vision certification at six years. National rules may be stricter.
